ENHANCE / DISRUPT
May 31 — Tappan Collective

  • My first collection with Tappan — 'ENHANCE / DISRUPT' comments on the spectrum of social association and how its value directly impresses itself onto our physical environment. In good company: music sounds catchier; food tastes better; views are more serene; foliage is more green and full; physical touch feels comforting or arousing; sunshine feels energizing and healing; a gust of wind sounds and feels cleansing. We may feel more beautiful, grounded, rested, light, present…our central nervous system is at ease.

  • Conversely: poor company leaves an environment feeling turbulent and tense. Music sounds agitating, loud, and repetitive. Food tastes bitter or stale. A scenic view or interior space looks mundane. Physical touch feels invasive. The sun is blinding, overheating, and harsh. A gust of wind feels volatile and destabilizing. We may feel small, heightened, activated, temperamental, insular… An objectively beautiful space suddenly feels hostile and erratic.

Spending a week in Key West pushed me out of my studio and onto an island riddled with lively strangers, an abundance of fresh seafood, and thriving variations of local wildlife and plants. My process shifted into a contemplative state — noting my own physical responses to a new environment while recalling previous ones in correlation. My endeavor was to maintain presence through drawing from my surroundings in a sketchbook and capturing most photography on film. I love the uncertainty of film. I would later revisit these vibrant moments of chaos, tension, intimacy, and leisure back home in the studio as inspiration. Documentation from this trip informed new and modified approaches to color, line work, and iconographic visual representations supporting the concept for this series. 'ENHANCE / DISRUPT’ ultimately speaks to physical awareness with regards to the company we keep and its impact on our environment.
